Jane Mamelok

I was a graduate entry to medical school (University College London 1986) having studied at Durham for my BSc. I have been a GP for 25 years and experienced many cycles of change in Primary Care from the 1990 Contract to the most recent reforms. I was still in clinical practice one day a week up to February 2015.

I have been involved in medical education for more than 20 years, working formerly as a course organiser, Associate GP Director (North Western Deanery) and more recently as a GP Director for Mersey. I was a GP Trainer in Cheadle for 15 years until my appointment as GP Director in 2011. With the integration of the two deaneries in February 2015, I took over from Dr Barry Lewis as GP Director for the single GP School across the whole of the North West footprint (Cheshire and Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cumbria and Lancashire). The experience, close working relationships and networks across both sides of the patch have been helpful for a smooth transition.

My main area of interest is assessment; I have 13 years’ experience as a MRCGP examiner and was the RCGP Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA) Clinical Lead until 2013. I continue to work closely with the RCGP Quality Management and Training Standards team. I have national roles relating to GP specialty training and have been involved in a number of changes to the GP Curriculum and recruitment initiatives. I am Vice – Chair of COGPED (Committee of GP Education Directors) and Chair the HEE GP Directors group.

I am Honorary Civilian Consultant Adviser to the Army and advise Defence Medical Services (DMS) on postgraduate medical training. Well someone has to go to Cyprus to approve military GP trainers!

Outside of medicine I am a passionate gardener and incompetent church bell ringer.
