John Adams

Whilst I carry a broad portfolio of responsibilities the strategic area that I lead on is Higher Specialist Training. I Chair the Committee, which develops policies and guidelines, which inform specialist registrar training.

There are six key areas: Infrastructure (including the development of STC Chairs), selection and recruitment, assessment/appraisal, formal education, placements/programmes and workforce planning.

Most developments are taken forward at regular STC Chairs Away Days.

Trainees are involved through representation on the training committees and on ad hoc working groups. The Deanery has a number of development projects, which are at various stages.

In my other life I am a part-time consultant in Accident and Emergency at the Royal Bolton Hospital. Having established the Unit I have pursued a long standing interest in medical education which led me to Chair the Speciality Training Committee and to become Regional Advisor to the Faculty of A&E Medicine.I am also an examiner in the "Exit" examination (FFAEM). I am a member of the GMC's Plab OSCE Panel and a Chief Invigilator for that examination.
