Professional Education and Development Course (PED)

Our course aims to help you achieve your goals and improve your life as you ride the roller-coaster of general practice. The underlying principle is to help participants develop both personally and professionally. We try to keep the course relevant to your situation and base the course on adult learning and action learning principles using your own experience as the basis for the learning in groups.

PED is aimed at GPs in the NHS England – North West area who have a regular position at a practice, be it as a partner or salaried. You are welcome as a locum, but please note that there is some optional written work which is accredited around personal education planning, practice development planning and critical incident analysis (which requires you to be in a regular practice). Successful completion this written work plus full attendance at all of the course, is associated with a Postgraduate Certificate award from the University of Lancashire (60 credits).

The course is based around group work and is highly reflective, with individual work between sessions. It is particularly useful for those who have a leadership or educational role or are interested in developing those areas.

PED is spread over two years with 3 residential modules in the Lake District and 3 study days held virtually.

Some quotes from previous participants:

“Excellent course, empowering, confidence and morale building”

“I came thinking of retirement and left energised”

“The best course or educational activity in my whole life”

“I have gained friends, support, confidence, direction and academic challenge”

‘’There really is something to be said for a residential. To be able to physically get away from your locality, to meet somewhere neutral, to feel able to talk openly. The setting, the environment, allows headspace to discuss any issues and support each other. Each time I complete a residential I feel sad to leave but also rejuvenated to go back to work with more focus and more direction.’’

‘’Having completed the various study days and 3 residentials, I can definitely say it surpassed all expectations and is the best thing I have done in my career so far!’’
