3-Step GP Trainer Journey

To support the ongoing expansion of GP Training and the Primary Care Workforce, the NW School of General Practice (in conjunction with the NW Training Hubs) has developed a GP Trainer Journey. This is a 3-step pathway that will allow GPs to develop their educational skills to their preferred level.

Please note, the NHS England – North West Supervisor Courses listed below are the only approved route to accreditation.

The GP Trainer journey consists of the following (in order and subject to appropriate environment approval):

  1. Attendance at the Wider Workforce Clinical Supervisor Course (which includes Foundation Supervision) run by the NW Training Hubs – following attendance at this course, you will be able to supervise wider workforce and foundation learners. To register for this course, please contact Connor Hilton on gmth@gmfeds.co.uk or complete the Course Expression of Interest form here: WWCS Course Expression of Interest Form. Queries regarding this Course should be directed to gmth@gmfeds.co.uk. You can find out further information on their website: Wider Workforce Clinical Supervisor’s Course and Foundation Doctor’s Supervision – Greater Manchester Training Hub
  2. Attendance at the NHS England-delivered GPST Clinical Supervisor (CS) Course - Once approved as a CS, you will be able to clinically supervise GPST1 and GPST2 Doctors in Training. Future dates will be advertised ASAP.
  3. Attendance at the NHS England-delivered GPST Educational Supervisor (ES) Course – Once approved as an ES, you will be able to supervise GPST3s (in addition to GPST1/2s). Future dates will be advertised ASAP.

If you are interested in the GPST Clinical and Educational Supervisor Courses, please complete the Expressions of Interest form here - Expression of Interest - GP Supervisor Courses – Fill in form - and we will contact you as soon as the next course dates are confirmed.

If you are not based in an approved Learning Environment, you will need to undergo a Unified Learning Environment Approval with your local Training Hub and Associate Dean. Further information regarding this can be found on https://www.nwpgmd.nhs.uk/learning-environments-primary-care
