Paediatric Surgery Curriculum

For the most up to date syllabus and curriculum, please visit the ISCP website.

The up to date JCST Certification Guidelines are available within the currilculum pages of the ISCP website.

Training Rotation

The resident doctors have either their first two years at Alder Hey Hospital or at Manchester Children’s Hospital, then their next two years at the other hospital. The final two years (ST7, ST8) are split between Manchester Children's Hospital and Alder Hey Hospital depending on training/subspeciality needs.

Paediatric urology training will be two 6 month blocks; one in ST4-5 and one in ST6-7.

Both sites provide basic and advanced training in general paediatric surgery and urology. Between them they can provide both basic and specialised training e.g. bladder exstrophy, short bowel management oncology and stone management services.

Educational Opportunities

There is a joint regional educational programme and in addition, each hospital runs weekly teaching sessions. All sites have access to a well resourced medical library and weekend access to allow personal reading and literature review.

Research and Audit

Research along clinical lines will be developed according to the individual's needs and interests. Basic science research is available at the University of Manchester and University of Liverpool. Clinical research by review of cases is encouraged. Each ST resident doctor will be expected to complete an audit cycle in each year of the programme.

Teaching and Leadership

In addition to opportunities in both hospitals NHS England – North West runs multiple opportunities for teaching/education and research opportunities.

Leadership courses: Medical Leadership Fellowship (part time), Postgraduate Module in Medical Leadership

Education course: PG Cert in Workplace Based Postgraduate Medical Education, Medical Education Fellowship
