Chemical Pathology

North West

Chemical pathology (or clinical biochemistry) is the branch of pathology dealing with the biochemical basis of disease and the use of biochemical tests for diagnosis and management.

Metabolic Medicine is a group of overlapping areas of clinical practice with common dependence on detailed understanding of basic biochemistry and metabolism, falling within the areas of expertise of both the physician and chemical pathologist.

What do we do?

  • Provide a reliable analytical service.
  • Advise on the management of patients with biochemical and metabolic disturbances.
  • Have direct responsbility for outpatients seen in specialist metabolic clinics and national outpatient programmes.

Overview of the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) Process

Annual Assessment and Review within Training Programmes

      Introduction

The Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) is a structured process designed to ensure that trainees are developing the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for progression within their training programme. The ARCP process is integral to maintaining the high standards required within clinical training and ensures that all trainees receive appropriate assessment and feedback regarding their performance and development.

Frequency and Scheduling of ARCP Panels

The ARCP process is undertaken annually, with two primary assessment panels convened each year: one in winter and another in summer. Trainees typically undergo one formal ARCP review per year, with the panel attended dependent on their start date or current stage of training. In some cases, interim reviews may be organised at more frequent intervals if circumstances require, such as concerns about progression or the need for additional support.

It is important to note, however, that the timing of ARCP panels is not always aligned with grade changes or rotations. The annual review is a distinct assessment of competence, separate from automatic advancement in training grade.

      Panel Composition and Assessment Method

The ARCP panel is chaired by the Training Programme Director and comprises senior faculty and relevant stakeholders involved in the training process. The primary role of the panel is to evaluate the evidence submitted by trainees—such as workplace-based assessments, logbooks, and reflective practice—against the standards expected for their current stage in training.

This assessment is conducted electronically, and there is no requirement for face-to-face attendance by the trainee at this stage. The panel reviews the submitted documentation in detail and reaches a collective judgment concerning the trainee’s competence and progression.

      Outcomes and Further Procedures

If the panel is satisfied that the evidence demonstrates expected competence, a satisfactory ARCP outcome is issued. However, if the panel determines that further development is required, a developmental outcome is given. In this scenario, the trainee will be required to attend a feedback panel. This subsequent panel provides the opportunity for direct feedback and discussion around the areas identified for improvement, and to agree a plan for future progression.

      Communication and Administrative Support

Following the ARCP panel, the NHS England Administrative team will contact trainees regarding outstanding requirements or documentation. This communication typically occurs within 12 weeks of the ARCP panel taking place and provides clear guidance for any next steps or action needed on the part of the trainee.

      Conclusion

The ARCP process ensures that all trainees are held to consistent standards and are supported in achieving the competencies required for their role. The system of annual electronic review, supplemented by feedback panels and administrative support, provides robust oversight of progression and development, while also allowing flexibility to address individual circumstances as necessary.
