Steven Woolley

Bio: 

Steven Woolley has been a consultant thoracic surgeon at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital since 2010.  He trained in the West Midlands as well as doing a Fellowship in Edinburgh and also working at University of Washington. He has always had a strong interest in education and training and has held roles of College Tutor and education lead at LHCH previously before becoming training programme director for cardiothoracic surgery for the Northwest for 6 years till April 2025.

He was Chairman of the Thoracic Surgery committee of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of Great Britain and Ireland 2019-2021 and in this post worked with the education team to improve opportunities for all doctors in cardiothoracic surgery in the UK and Ireland. He is an examiner for the FRCS CTh.

He is a current SAC member for Cardiothoracic Surgery for the UK and Ireland and also Chair of the National selection board for cardiothoracic surgery. In these roles he has worked to improve opportunities and training for LED and NTN doctors as well ensure recruitment is fair and transparent.

In his current role he is one of the Associate Deans for Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) and is working with trusts in the North West as well as the deanery and NHS England’s Postgraduate Medical Education Reform team to improve working lives and career progression for LEDs. He is also the Associate Dean for the School of Anaesthesia and works closely with the Head of School, Associate Head of School and TPDs to deliver the best possible training and support for anaesthetic resident doctors in the region.
