Welcome to the North West School of Surgery

Our aim is to be an outstanding School of Surgery that delivers personalised educational programmes for all our trainees and supports our trainers to deliver these programmes.

We have active regional educational programmes in all specialties. We have a trainee forum/committee that meets twice a year and individual specialty training committees with trainee representatives, that meet at least twice a year. We aim to develop the specialty training programmes/posts in keeping with changing curriculum requirements. We work closely with the SACs to ensure fair assessment and career progression. We enjoy good relationships with all the UK colleges. They have been very supportive of educational days for both surgical educator and medical students interested in surgery.

With the two former deaneries merging (Mersey and North Western) some of our training programmes are across both sectors, and others are separate. Please see each specialty page to get further details (links to the individual specialty pages can be accessed through the menu on the right of this page). The Training Programme Directors contact details are on each of the specialty pages. There is a specific area to help surgical educators from all specialties. If you are interested in joining the North West School of Surgery, or would like any further information, do contact us and we will endeavour to help you with your inquiries.

Best Wishes,

Alison Waghorn

Head of the North West School of Surgery

New Surgical Curriculums from August 2020

New Surgical Curriculums are due to implemented in all surgical specialties from August 2020. All trainees will be expected to transition to the new curriculum at the latest by 3 August 2022. Trainees should transition to the new curriculum after the ARCP at the end of their current level of training, except:

  • Trainees moving into CT2 in decoupled Core Surgery or into ST8 (or ST7 in Urology or OMFS) who may choose to remain on the old curriculum.

The new curriculums have not yet been published, however there is some information on the ISCP website as well as the new curricula purpose statements.
