This workshop allows delegates to explore and understand the cultural differences and
diversity existing within the NHS. Using theorists such as Hofstede and Trompenaars, along
with research and comparisons of how healthcare staff are taught in the East versus the West
to broaden participants understanding. In today’s NHS, the patient has become far more
discerning and expectations have become higher. The aim of this workshop is to explore the
ways that culture affects perceptions, behaviours and communications.
Measurable Aims: At the end of this programme, the delegate can:
Ø Describe 5 ways that the influence of culture impacts on attitudes towards
communication
Ø Consider 6 cultural dimensions in managing the doctor and patient relationship and
the effect they have on that partnership
Ø List 5 barriers to effective cross-cultural communication and how to deal with them
The Programme Includes:
Ø Module 1: Cross Cultural Communication-background
Ø What challenges and barriers affect cross cultural communication in the NHS workplace?
Ø Module 2: Differences between Western communication and traditional Indigenous
Communication
Ø Language and Power distances
