Applying: You will only need to submit 1 application form in order to be considered for any or all of the following Core Surgical Specialties at CT1 level in 2010. When applying, you will be asked to put the following specialties in your order of preference. You will also be able to indicate if you do not wish to be considered for a specialty or specialties.

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • ENT
  • General Surgery
  • Generic Surgery - Unthemed

Longlisting: All application forms will be checked to decide whether they are eligible to go forward to the shortlisters. The longlisting will look to see that you meet the following areas of the relevant person specification:

1. You possess the qualifications required

2. You have the correct amount of experience in the specialty you are applying to

3. You have fully completed all the relevant sections of the application form and

4. Doctors who are not UK or EEA nationals and whose immigration status entitles them to work without restriction in the UK will be considered on an equal basis with UK and EEA nationals. Other non-UK or non-EEA nationals with limited leave to remain in the UK and whose employment will require Tier 2 sponsorship are subject to the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT). As the RLMT will not be deemed to have been satisfied in Round 1 of the recruitment to this specialty, applicants in this category are asked to consider applying during Round 2. Applicants may only be considered if there is no suitable UK or EEA national candidate for the post. Evidence of immigration status should normally consist of a date stamped passport and accompanying letter from the Home Office. Please visit http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk for more information.

Shortlisting:  Application forms will be scored by two trained assessors against a set of shortlisting criteria that will have been agreed in advance. Application forms will be anonymised.  If you score highly enough you will be invited to attend a selection centre.

Programme Details

Last updated: 11.12.2009

If you are interested in seeing how General Surgery in the North Western Deanery was rated in the
PMETB Trainee Survey for 2009, click here.

Introduction/Overview of Programme

These posts offer themed Core Surgical Training in General Surgery (CT1 and CT2) in line with the surgical curriculum (see www.iscp.ac.uk for details).

General Description of Rotation

Trainees in CT1 and CT2 will be allocated to one of the 2 geographical sectors within the Deanery for Core Training in General Surgery. Attachments in CT1 will include 6 months in general surgery and 6 months in another surgical specialty and CT2 is 12 months in general surgery.

Trainees will participate in the ARCP interim and final appraisal processes organised by the Deanery.

Educational Opportunities

Trainees in CT1 and CT2 will be expected to attend local educational programmes which held in the hospital where they are working.

There is a comprehensive core teaching programme which takes place on Wednesday afternoons at Wythenshawe Hospital; attendance is mandatory and an attendance register is kept and monitored.

The timetable for teaching can be viewed at www.surgicalcourses.com

Research/Audit/Teaching

Trainees are encouraged to develop a research interest and to carry out audit against NICE guidelines. This is assessed as part of the ARCP process.

All trainees should be actively involved in audit on an ongoing basis and be in a position to demonstrate this at annual appraisal and ARCP interviews.

Teaching of less experienced medical colleagues, medical students, nurses and other paramedical staff is an integral part of the post and all trainees are expected to be involved in this.
