Applying: You will only need to submit 1 application form in order to be considered for any or all of the following Core Surgical Specialties at CT1 level in 2010. When applying, you will be asked to put the following specialties in your order of preference. You will also be able to indicate if you do not wish to be considered for a specialty or specialties.

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • ENT
  • General Surgery
  • Generic Surgery - Unthemed
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Urology

Longlisting: All application forms will be checked to decide whether they are eligible to go forward to the shortlisters. The longlisting will look to see that you meet the following areas of the relevant person specification:

1. You possess the qualifications required

2. You have the correct amount of experience in the specialty you are applying to

3. You have fully completed all the relevant sections of the application form and

4. Doctors who are not UK or EEA nationals and whose immigration status entitles them to work without restriction in the UK will be considered on an equal basis with UK and EEA nationals. Other non-UK or non-EEA nationals with limited leave to remain in the UK and whose employment will require Tier 2 sponsorship are subject to the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT). As the RLMT will not be deemed to have been satisfied in Round 1 of the recruitment to this specialty, applicants in this category are asked to consider applying during Round 2. Applicants may only be considered if there is no suitable UK or EEA national candidate for the post. Evidence of immigration status should normally consist of a date stamped passport and accompanying letter from the Home Office. Please visit http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk for more information.

Shortlisting: Application forms will be scored by two trained assessors against a set of shortlisting criteria that will have been agreed in advance. Application forms will be anonymised.  If you score highly enough you will be invited to attend a selection Centre.

Programme Details - Core Training

Last updated: 11.12.2009

If you are interested in seeing how Urology in the North Western Deanery was rated in the PMETB
Trainee Survey for 2009, click here.

Introduction/Overview of Programme

Urology training will be delivered in line with the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Project.  Training placements are located in hospitals in the 2 sectors for core surgical training in the North Western Deanery.

General Description of Rotation

The CT1 and CT2 Urology themed posts are in the following localities in the North West; Manchester West, Manchester South, Preston, Lancaster and East Lancashire.

Trainees in the initial 2 years of training are expected to gain basic open and endoscopic surgical skills. From CT1 the training will follow the Urology core curriculum as described on the ISCP website and CT1 will include 6 months of Urology and 6 months of another specialty.  CT2 will be 12 months in Urology.

Trainees will participate in the ARCP interim and final appraisal processes organised by the Deanery.

Educational Opportunities

Trainees in CT1 and CT2 will be expected to attend local educational programmes which will be held in the hospital where they are working.

There is a comprehensive core teaching programme which takes place on Wednesday afternoons at Wythenshawe Hospital. Attendance is mandatory and an attendance register is kept and monitored.

The timetable for teaching can be viewed at www.surgicalcourses.com

Research / Audit / Teaching

Regular audit is an important part of surgical practice and trainees are expected to undertake and present an average of 2 audit projects per year. The North West Urology Audit has been running for over 10 years and all trainees are expected to attend the twice yearly meetings. There are opportunities for trainees to present their audit work at these meetings and also to be involved with regional audit projects.

A good deal of clinical and scientific urological research work is undertaken in the region. All trainees should develop a research section in their portfolios.

Most of the regions Urology units are based in teaching hospitals and trainees are expected to be involved with undergraduate medical and nursing education.
