PG Certificate: Frequently Asked Questions

Why were Edge Hill chosen?

The contract was awarded to Edge Hill University following a competitive tender process. The team at Edge Hill have a great deal of experience of successfully delivering blended learning healthcare courses. They have a particularly flexible approach to educational pathways, which enables students to step on and off the programme according to other commitments, and importantly they have the capacity to deliver a high quality educational experience to large numbers of students.

Is this course compulsory?

Module 1 of the PG Certificate is not compulsory but has been specifically commissioned to address the most recent developments in work place based teaching and assessment. Module 1 has been developed to meet the standards for clinical supervision as laid out by the GMC and, following this, the North Western Deanery. At the end of module 1 participants will be accredited as a North Western Deanery Clinical Supervisor and receive a certificate as evidence. We are therefore highly recommending the module to potential students.

How do I check my eligibility?

The North Western Deanery is funding one year group of higher specialty trainees to undertake Module 1 of the programme annually giving them the opportunity to become accredited as clinical supervisors prior to achieving a CCT. Training Programme Directors were consulted to identify the most appropriate year group for their specialty. Please see below Specialty Year Group List which identifies which year group will be funded through Module 1. Please note that eligibility is decided based on year groups as at September therefore if you move up into the year group specified in the attached after September then you will be eligible in the following academic year.

What do I do if I think I'm eligible but I haven't received any information?

If you have checked on the Specialty Year Group List [attached above] and you believe you are in the correct year group for your specialty to receive a funded place on the PGCE but have not received any information from us this may simply be an administrative error on our part. Please contact us via nwd.pgce@nw.hee.nhs.uk stating your name, specialty and year group along with your query and we will be happy to look into your eligibility status and reply as soon as we are able.

What if I am in a more senior year than the trainees in my specialty who are being allocated places? Can I still do the course?

We are sorry but you will not be eligible for a funded place for module 1. However, many trainees in your position have already completed a 2 day Train the Trainers type course run by the Deanery, which will have provided some of the basics you will need as a Clinical Supervisor. For those who have not completed this type of course, there are currently some training events available. Please email joanne.keyes@nw.hee.nhs.uk for more information on dates.

You are of course still welcome to apply as an individual self funded applicant if you wish, and places are available.

Do I have to pay for the course?

If you are in the year group specified by the Training Programme Director then you will be eligible for Deanery funding through module 1. Medical Education Fellows are funded through modules 1 and 2 by the Deanery. If you are junior to the year specified in the attached document then you will be eligible for a Deanery funded place in the future. Anyone who is more senior than the specified training year will have to self fund through the modules at a cost of £350 per module.

Do I have to apply for study leave?

Yes, you do have to apply for study leave. We aim to always give at least 8 weeks notice of dates to trainees so that study leave can be arranged easily. During the course of Module 1 there will be a one day Induction and three half day workshops. Date choices for these face-to-face session can be found on Blackboard (you will receive log-in details for Blackboard once you have registered).

What do I do if I go out of programme / on maternity leave / on sick leave?

If you receive registration instructions from us but you will be out of programme / on maternity leave / on sick leave during the time of the course please let us know and identify where possible when you will be returning to programme so that we can allocate you to a future cohort.

If you are already out of programme but will be in the eligible year group when you return to your training programme you will be registered at that time. You will receive more information on which cohort you will be allocated to, once you have rejoined your training programme.

What if I've already completed a similar course?

Module 1 of the PG Certificate has been specifically commissioned to address the most recent developments in work place based teaching and assessment, which are unlikely to have been covered in sufficient depth on other generic courses. Module 1 has been developed to meet the standards for clinical supervision as laid out by PMETB (now merged with the GMC) and, following this, the North Western Deanery. At the end of module 1 participants will be accredited as a North Western Deanery Clinical Supervisor and receive a certificate as evidence. We are therefore highly recommending the module to potential students.

The Deanery view is that you will still benefit from undertaking module 1 in addition to any previous studies completed elsewhere. However, if you feel that through the PGCE, or other programme you have undertaken, you can adequately demonstrate you meet the standards for trainers then you can decide not to take up your funded place. We would advise you map the content of your previous PGCE to the standards to ensure you can demonstrate the relevant components.

What if I don't have enough time to do it at the moment?

Unfortunately we are only able to fund you through module 1 of the PGCE when you are in the specified year group. There are certain circumstances where we are able to move you into a future cohort e.g. maternity leave, extended sick leave, going out of programme, career break. However, other than these circumstances, if you choose not to undertake the PGCE at the time we offer you a Deanery funded place then your option will be to self fund at a time suitable for you.

What if I can't attend my allocated Induction day?

We hold 3 Induction days for each cohort of module 1; if you are unable to attend on your allocated date please contact us at nwd.pgce@nw.hee.nhs.uk for the alternative dates. Please note that there must be a legitimate reason for being unable to attend your allocated induction before a swap will be considered.

What do I do if I'm having problems with Blackboard?

Blackboard is Edge Hill University's online learning platform. If you have a problem with any aspect of Blackboard please contact Carol Chatten, Learning Technologist by email Carol.Chatten@edgehill.ac.uk, by telephone 01695 650 981 or via Blackboard.
