Application Process for Core Training

Longlisting:  All application forms will be checked to decide whether they are eligible to go forward to the shortlisters. The longlisting will look to see that you meet the following areas of the relevant person specification:
1. You possess the qualifications required
2. You have the correct amount of experience in the specialty you are applying to
3. You have fully completed all the relevant sections of the application form and
4. Your immigration status allows you to work in the UK. Please click here for further information on eligibility and immigration status relating to postgraduate doctors and dentists.
If it is determined that your application does not meet the required standard, your application will not proceed to the shortlisting stage.

Shortlisting: Application forms will be scored by two trained assessors against a set of shortlisting criteria that will have been agreed in advance. Application forms will be anonymised.  If you score highly enough you will be invited to attend a selection Centre.

Selection Centre for CT2
: The selection Centre in 2009 consisted of 3 interview stations each lasting 10 minutes. The stations covered the following areas:
1. Structured Interview
2. Scenario
3. Logbook

A similar set up for 2010 is likely.

Selection Centre for CT1: The process in 2009 was as follows: Shortlisted candidates were invited to their first choice Deanery and underwent a seven station assessment and selection process, including clinical and practical skills stations and structured interviews. Candidates had to bring with them, to the interview, their completed self-scoring form and the required evidence to support their application, in a separate folder from their portfolio, so that the self-scoring form could be fully validated on-site.

During the selection centre all shortlisted candidates were required to complete a written examination, the results were not used to evaluate the pilot project and for the selection process in future years. This written examination did not form part of the recruitment process.

Introduction/Overview of Programme

The core training programme in trauma and orthopaedics will enable the trainee to achieve the required competencies in line with the curriculum.  Training will be based in hospitals throughout the 4 sectors for core surgical training within the North Western Deanery.

General Description of Rotation

The training rotation includes posts at all training Trusts throughout the NW region.  CT1 is a themed year aimed at the management of surgical emergencies; this will include 6 months in orthopaedics and 6 months in another surgical specialty.  CT2 builds on this, concentrating on the management of common orthopaedic trauma and will include 12 months in orthopaedics.

Trainees will participate in the ARCP interim and final appraisal processes organised by the Deanery.

Educational Opportunities

CT1 and CT2 trainees will receive appropriate weekly teaching and training based on the themed curriculum.  Appraisals will be based on national guidelines.
Each Trust provides a weekly programme of in-house teaching, trauma and radiology meetings, journal reviews and research and audit reviews.

There is a comprehensive core teaching programme which takes place on Wednesday afternoons at Wythenshawe Hospital, attendance is mandatory and an attendance register is kept and monitored.

The timetable for teaching can be viewed at www.surgicalcourses.com

Research/Audit/Teaching

Involvement in research and audit is expected and encouraged.  Most Trusts have a head of research and an audit lead which will provide ideas and support for projects.  A substantial project is expected to be produced for the award of the MSc.  This can be clinical or science based through contacts with the Regional Musculo-Skeletal Research Network.
