The North Western Deanery Medical Education Fellowship has been designed to facilitate the development of trainees who have a specific interest in medical education. The scheme aims to nurture and develop educationally minded professionals who may be interested to take up lead educator roles in the future, through collaboration with and support from the North Western Deanery.
It is hoped that by stimulating interest in education during training, individuals will go forward with the skills and motivation to take up valuable educational roles within their workplace. Those in the MEF role will help to foster a culture of teaching and learning as an integral part of clinical practice and help to further develop its importance in promoting excellence in the doctors of the future.
There are currently 17 Medical Education Fellows (MEFs) in 2 cohorts within the scheme. 8 commenced in August 2009 and 9 in August 2010. Appointments are for an initial period of 1 year with a second year subject to satisfactory progress.
Recruitment is now open for application to a third MEF cohort to start in August 2011. If you are interested in applying for an MEF role and for further information please see the attached;

Eligibility:
The opportunity to take up an MEF role is open to trainees who are currently on a North Western Deanery specialty training programme in all specialties (except GP), at SPR or StR, ST3 and above (ST4 and above in psychiatry, emergency medicine and paediatrics) and who are at least 24 months from projected CCT date in August 2011. The North Western Deanery propose to appoint a maximum of 10 trainees with an initial tenure of 1 year, with the option to extend to a maximum of 2 years, subject to satisfactory progress.
The programme:
Post holders will remain in their clinical training placements as determined by the relevant training programme director. This will not be an out of programme post or lead to an extension of the CCT date. It will help to formalise educational activity, which some individuals undertake already, and provide support, incentives and resources to do so. This is in much the same way that some individuals undertake clinical research as part of their clinical training attachment.
The appointed trainees will pursue a module of the Postgraduate Certificate in Workplace Based Postgraduate Medical Education and complete a project looking into a defined area of educational interest. This could be either locally, regionally or at national level.
The Deanery will oversee the MEF role and those appointed to the posts will have a nominated supervisor for this role. They will be expected to agree an educational development plan and undergo regular educational appraisal with their nominated supervisor over the year. An educational portfolio should be kept. Individuals will be expected to show evidence of progress over the course of their appointment. At the end of year 1, and year 2 if granted, the MEF will be expected to provide the deanery with a report on their educational activity and its outcomes.
Application:
To be considered for the position, individuals will need to show commitment to education and training. Interested trainees are asked to complete an application available on the North Western Deanery website by Midday Tuesday 3rd May 2011. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview on Wednesday 29th June 2011. Successful candidates will take up their MEF roles in August 2011.
