George Nasmyth

My portfolio of interests and responsibilities within the Deanery includes working closely with Cumbria and Lancashire SHA, managing and developing the medical workforce (workforce planning), lead Associate Dean for Mental Health Specialties, and patch responsibilities for Blackpool Fylde and Wyre and the Mental Health Trusts in Cumbria and Lancashire.

Modernising Medical Careers is a major challenge which also provides an opportunity for looking at the configuration of training structures and how these can be best configured to meet the training needs of local health economies. I am leading a project on post-Foundation training which has this as one of its key objectives.

Cumbria and Lancashire have expanded their educational base at undergraduate level and there is now a challenge to ensure that high quality postgraduate training is provided locally, and to deliver an educational continuum from undergraduate to career grade (General Practitioner or Specialist Consultant).

A supportive environment for postgraduate education feeds into a quality service for local health economies and will underpin Life-long Learning and Continuing Professional Development in a multidisciplinary setting.

I sit on a number of Local Workforce Advisory Groups in Cumbria and Lancashire. I have an interest in developing service and educational programmes which are mutually supportive and provide a team based delivery of high quality patient centred care, but permit an appropriate work-life balance for all health professionals. My role outside the Deanery is that of a General and Colorectal Surgeon in Barrow-in-Furness. Furness General Hospital is a part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, in which I have additional roles as Clinical Director of Surgery and Associate Medical Director.
