Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a fellowship?

Fellowships offer resident doctors the opportunity to work within NHS England Workforce, Education and Training, to gain experience and develop skills of system leadership, transformation and service improvement. This will be on 1 day a week basis for a 12 month period.

Who is eligible to apply for a fellowship?

Any resident doctor in a training post in a North West hospital at ST3 or above is eligible to apply.

When will the fellowship start and end?

We are aiming to start the fellowships in the autumn, for a 12-month period on a 1 day per week basis.

How do I apply?

To apply, please read the job descriptions and details above. You’ll need to email a statement expressing your interest and suitability for the role to the relevant associate dean, (or clinical data unit admin email for the CIDS fellowship). Contact details for the relevant individual are at the end of each job description. The deadline for applications is 15th August 2025.

Who can I contact for further information?

For informal queries please email the relevant Associate Dean or clinical data unit admin as outlined in the relevant job description.

Can I apply for multiple fellowships?

Yes, resident doctors can apply for multiple fellowships (separate applications are required for each) but can only be appointed to one.

Are fellowships paid positions?

Fellowships are fully funded by NHS England, based on 1 day per week.

Do I go LTFT?

Fellows may reduce their clinical commitments, or they may choose to carry out this work in addition to current LTFT arrangements if suitable. Clinical and training time cannot drop below 50 percent, or exceed 100 percent. Several scenarios are outlined below:

  • RD working full time, drops clinical commitments to 80 percent and carries out fellowship role 1 day per week
  • RD Working 60 percent, remains on 60 percent and carries out fellowship role on additional 1 day per week.
  • RD working 80 percent, drops clinical commitments to 60 percent and carries out fellowship role 1 day per week

It is important to understand that this may change the current time in training and the future certificate of completion (CCT) date. It is essential that resident doctors have a discussion with their current training programme director (TPD) and obtain their agreement prior to application.

What support is available during a fellowship?

Regular supervision and mentorship will be provided by the NHS England Associate Deans and MFT clinical data sciences team.
